Analyst ReportC#, VB Updates Optimize Development, Shorten Code
Visual Studio (VS) 2015 and subsequent updates bring enhancements to the .NET Framework-based C# and Visual Basic (VB) programming languages and related tools. The language changes could help developers write terser code, which can make software easier to maintain. A new compiler, code-named Roslyn, can help developers write and optimize code while conforming to team practices and styles. A revised strategy will allow C# and VB to diverge in future releases, for which new features have been announced and previewed. Teams should consider the resources needed to convert existing projects to VS 2015 and adjust code for breaking changes when upgrading.
Cross-plat, UWP Supported, C# and VB Set to Diverge
C# 6.0, included in VS 2015, is the latest version of the original Microsoft programming language designed specifically to target the .NET Framework. C# debuted in 2002 and has become the most popular language for developing managed code (programs that are executed by the Common Language Runtime [CLR] engine included with the .NET Framework). Furthermore, C# ranks as one of the most popular languages overall, as it contends with others such as C++, Java, JavaScript, and Python.
