Analyst ReportCommerce Server 2009 Leverages SharePoint
Commerce Server (CS) 2009, released in Mar. 2009, includes SharePoint Web Parts that can be used to build commerce sites; a multichannel framework that simplifies site rendering for different scenarios, such as desktop and mobile; and a revised “default” site that reduces development effort when implementing a new commerce site. CS 2009 is the most extensive redesign of the product since CS 2002 was released in Apr. 2002 (CS 2007 was a minor release). However, CS development has been outsourced to Cactus Commerce since 2007, which raises uncertainty regarding Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to the product line.
CS is a platform for Web retail and other kinds of Web commerce sites. It includes modules for product catalog management, order processing, user tracking and personalization, targeted marketing, and data analysis (analyzing site traffic, for instance). CS runs on ASP.NET and SQL Server and integrates with other Microsoft products, such as BizTalk Server and now SharePoint Server.
