The R2 release of Configuration Manager 2007, Microsoft’s enterprise systems management tool, works with Vista SP1 and Windows Server 2008 and adds features for managing virtual applications, generating advanced reports, and distributing updates and signature files for Forefront Client Security antimalware. The new features allow Configuration Manager to work better with an organization’s other systems management and security tools.

R2 Adds Reporting, Forefront Integration

System Center Configuration Manager, formerly Systems Management Server (SMS), tracks computer hardware and software and distributes and updates software on large numbers of computers in an organization. It provides patch management, software distribution, OS deployment, hardware and software inventory for both desktops and servers, and remote control. Configuration Manager agent software runs on client computers, while server components maintain a database of clients and desired configurations, notify clients of updates to OS and applications, and report on compliance with configuration policies set by administrators.
