  • Windows Server rollup packages could help maintain standard server configurations.
  • Rollups are all or nothing: A single bad patch can force removal of an entire rollup.

Windows Server 2008 SP2 will move to a rollup servicing model for monthly updates, beginning with a preview of the monthly quality update on Aug. 21, 2018. Rollups, also called cumulative updates, contain all applicable fixes in a single update. Rollups can reduce the number of updates to apply and help ensure all systems have the same patches. However, elimination of the previous model of individual patches will force administrators to roll back an entire update in the event of a problem with a single fix.

Three rollups are typically released each month:

  • A security-only quality update containing only new security fixes, without nonsecurity or previous fixes
  • A monthly quality rollup containing new security and nonsecurity fixes as well as previous fixes
  • A preview of the next monthly quality update.

The first two quality updates are released on the second Tuesday of each month (“Patch Tuesday”), while the third, preview, update is released on the third Tuesday of the month.
