A major new version of the SQL Server database management and business intelligence software, “Denali,” is planned for late 2011. Also planned in 2011 is a line of data warehousing server appliances from partners and continued updates to Microsoft’s SQL Azure database hosting service. Future SQL Server database management technology will probably be influenced by SQL Azure as well as the company’s other cloud services and applications, while the focus of its data analysis efforts shifts to new technologies introduced in 2010.

Appliances, Major Software Version in 2011

The SQL Server software consists of a database management system and a platform for BI. The most recent version of the BI platform includes the following major components:

Reporting Services for design and distribution of reports
Integration Services for extracting data from data sources for analysis, as well as bulk transfer between sources
Analysis Services
