Dynamics AX 2012, the latest version of Microsoft’s enterprise resource planning (ERP) product for midsize and large organizations, includes major upgrades to the product’s components for managing business processes. The updated components make the product more viable for large, global businesses and better address organizations in the public sector and other industries. However, the changes mean that existing installations will need substantial updates to be upgraded, and business personnel will have to play a larger role than normal in the upgrade planning process.

A Platform and Components for Global Businesses

Dynamics AX, Microsoft’s high-end ERP product, is aimed at midsize companies operating in multiple countries as well as business units in large companies. It is sold worldwide and is the fastest growing of Microsoft’s four ERP products. It is also the only ERP product that Microsoft is expanding to new industries: over the last two years, Microsoft has built or bought Dynamics AX extensions for process manufacturing, retail, professional services, and public sector organizations.
