In an effort to spur evaluation and adoption of its Windows Embedded OSs, Microsoft will allow qualified board vendors to preload and distribute a Windows CE .NET or Windows XP Embedded run-time image on up to 1,000 copies of their hardware platforms free of charge. Microsoft hopes distributors will be more likely to release combined hardware and software evaluation kits for their customers, providing a complete solution or “device bring-up” right out of the box. Like the previously announced price cut for Windows CE .NET, the availability of hardware kits for evaluation will keep Windows Embedded competitive with Linux for smart devices by reducing development costs and the time it takes to get a device to market.

The Windows Embedded Evaluation Toolkits were previously available only through authorized distributors or online through Microsoft’s Web site. With the additional distribution rights, the Windows Embedded Evaluation Hardware Kit Program makes the kits available from any Windows Embedded partner that is producing and distributing evaluation hardware platforms running a Windows Embedded OS.
