Enterprise priorities of Microsoft in 2015 resemble those of 2014, but more software and hosted service updates are on the company’s technology roadmap for this year. Mobile devices and cloud services will drive Microsoft software development, and the company will promote subscription licensing, rework its engineering for more frequent releases, and support a more diverse range of technologies. Organizations should monitor the evolution of the company’s roadmap and licensing policies and look for guidance at public events scheduled for late April and early May of 2015.

Evolving Beyond PC and Server Software

Microsoft remains profitable and revenues continue to grow, but profit margins have fallen due to slow growth in its traditional Windows and Office PC software businesses. (See the chart “Microsoft Financials for the Last Five Years“.) To compensate, Microsoft is investing in the following areas:
