Exchange Server 2010, which is now generally available, includes new and enhanced APIs to simplify development of Exchange-based applications and support new features in Exchange 2010. Exchange Web Services (EWS) gains more support as the API of choice for developing Exchange-based applications. Several APIs available in Exchange 2007 are no longer available in Exchange 2010, while others, such as the popular Messaging API (MAPI), are deprecated. Organizations should consider how the API improvements and changes could be used to enhance or future-proof existing applications, or in some cases require them to be rewritten to enable Exchange 2010 compatibility.

Originally conceived as simply an e-mail server, Exchange morphed and gained new features as Microsoft competed with products such as Lotus Notes.
