  • Exchange Online continues to simplify migration from other mail systems, especially via hybrid configurations with Exchange Server on-premises.
  • Technology retirements over the next five years mean some customers must schedule client upgrades and other projects to keep Exchange Online working.

Exchange Online is a Microsoft-hosted messaging and collaboration service that shares technology with the Exchange Server software. It supports e-mail, calendars, contacts, and tasks; works with Exchange-compatible clients; and offers a Microsoft-hosted version of Outlook on the Web. Exchange Online receives improvements before Exchange Server, but the pace of change might be challenging to some customers.

Capabilities and Limitations

Most on-premises Exchange features are also supported in Exchange Online, including public folders, archiving, cross-mailbox search, and administration tools. Exchange Online can be used in a hybrid configuration with Exchange Server on-premises, in which some mailboxes are on-premises and others are online.
