  • Exchange Online should get improvements in 2020 for e-mail delivery, Web access, scripting, and migration from other mail systems.
  • Retirements in 2020 affect voice mail, third-party clients, and some mail-enabled devices and applications.
  • There are no announced plans to bring Exchange Online improvements to Exchange Server customers.

Exchange Online should receive improvements in 2020 for e-mail delivery, Web access, scripting, and migration from other mail systems. However, several protocols, features, and clients will shut down.

Service Overview

Most on-premises Exchange features are also supported in Exchange Online, including public folders, archiving, cross-mailbox search, and administration tools. Exchange Online can be used in a hybrid configuration with Exchange Server on-premises, in which some mailboxes are on-premises and others are online.

Exchange Online integrates with other Microsoft-hosted services, including Exchange Online Protection and Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection for filtering and antivirus, Exchange Online Archiving for mailbox archiving, and Office 365 Message Encryption for message security. These services are bundled with Exchange Online in some Office 365 licensing plans.
