The next version of Exchange Server will be Exchange Server 2019, and it will probably be released in the second half of 2018. The Exchange Server software provides e-mail communication and manages calendars, contacts, tasks, and voice mail on-premises. The next version will improve coexistence with Exchange Online, the hosted service that is the focus of Microsoft’s e-mail and calendaring strategy, so improvements for pure on-premises installations could be limited.

Exchange Server 2019

Exchange Server 2019 was formally announced at the Sept. 2017 Microsoft Ignite conference, and an invitation-only Technology Adoption Program (TAP) is under way. (See the illustration “Exchange Server Timeline“.)

Exchange Server 2019 will deliver improvements for hybrid configurations with Exchange Online, such as the following:

  • Applications will be able to access both online and on-premises mailboxes using a single set of Representational State Transfer (REST) APIs based on those currently offered
