  • The continuing stream of improvements to Fabric demonstrates Microsoft’s continued investment in, and prioritization of, the platform.
  • AI and security are both top focus areas for Fabric, as they are for the entire company.
  • Support for more types of data sources (such as PostgreSQL) and tools (such as Excel) can help Fabric reach more of an organization’s data and data analysts.

Fabric, Microsoft’s data and analytics cloud service, continues to receive a steady stream of new features and enhancements. The sheer number of new features as well as the types of improvements Microsoft is making not only demonstrate Microsoft’s investment in, and prioritization of, Fabric, but also provide an insight into the kinds of improvements likely to come over the next 12 months.

Fabric Is Strategic

Fabric is more than just a product for Microsoft. In many ways, it is the company’s strategic response to the rise of the so-called modern data stack, a widely used collection of cloud-based and often open-source tools and technologies used to collect, process, store, and analyze data in a more agile and cost-effective way than can be done with more traditional data warehousing tools such as SQL Server. With Fabric, Microsoft aims to integrate technologies such as Apache Spark, Parquet, and Delta Lake with its existing tools, such as Power BI and Office 365. This can make the overall product more appealing to organizations that might be put off by the do-it-yourself nature of building directly on a collection of disparate products from separate vendors.
