  • Fabric workspaces are secure collaboration areas that hold workload content and are used to manage users and access to shared data.
  • They are similar to Power BI workspaces, but more complex, meaning administrators need to be more diligent when rearchitecting deployments to avoid problems.
  • While migrating from Power BI workspaces is straightforward, moving from other services into Fabric requires redesigning deployments.

Microsoft Fabric, a new data analytics and data storage cloud offering, uses the Power BI workspace concept to provide a collaboration environment for sharing content and data among the various Fabric components (called experiences). Although Fabric workspaces follow the Power BI format, configuring Fabric workspaces correctly is more critical than in Power BI. This is because Fabric workspaces manage a wider variety of workloads and users, and they store far more content and data than Power BI workspaces. Proper workspace configuration requires rearchitecting workloads being migrated to Fabric and understanding new management processes and techniques. The need to rearchitect deployments will mostly affect workloads migrating from non-Power BI services, including Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Data Explorer.
