Forefront Protection 2010 for Exchange Server, which provides antimalware, antispam, and content filtering for Microsoft’s e-mail server software, was released in Nov. 2009, simultaneously with Exchange Server 2010. Forefront Online Protection for Exchange was also updated at the same time. The updates add support for Exchange 2010 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Both are part of the next versions of the Forefront line of products (previously code-named Stirling) that will be released over the next year.

What Forefront Does

Forefront products provide a wide range of security-related functions, such as intercepting malware before it reaches users’ computers and managing users’ identity information and associated permissions. The Forefront brand was originally applied to Antigen-branded products that were acquired from Sybari, but has since been expanded to encompass products that Microsoft developed in-house or acquired elsewhere. (For details of the Forefront products and release dates, see the chart “Forefront Product Line“.)
