Foundry Local is a free command-line tool that allows developers to run selected open-source AI models on their own systems. It has significant limitations when compared with other popular local engines, but it does offer one capability they lack: support for the AI accelerators Microsoft includes in its Copilot+ PCs. It’s in preview with no announced date for general availability.

Foundry Local, like other local AI engines, runs open-source models, which are much less capable but also less CPU and memory intensive than the widely used commercial models from OpenAI or Anthropic.
