Microsoft has not yet released a roadmap detailing the long-term future of BizTalk Server. However, the company plans to release an update to BizTalk 2004 in late 2005 or early 2006 that will incrementally improve BizTalk 2004 features and address some known deficiencies in the product. In addition, the company will continue to develop new or updated BizTalk Server adapters and accelerators in an attempt to expand the product’s reach and thus broaden adoption. Longer term, Microsoft’s efforts will likely focus on reconciliation and integration with other technologies, such as the SQL Service Broker (SSB) messaging component, planned for release with SQL Server 2005 and the “Indigo” messaging component planned for Windows. Microsoft will also pave the way for integration with the next major iteration of Windows, code-named Longhorn.

Mid-Term: Incremental Release, More Accelerators

The next version of BizTalk will likely appear in late 2005 or early 2006, following the release of SQL Server 2005 and VS.NET 2005 (Microsoft’s next versions of SQL Server and Visual Studio, respectively). Rather than making sweeping changes to BizTalk’s features and architecture, Microsoft has suggested it will incrementally improve the product for developers, IT personnel, and business users. The company will also continue to push ahead with additional BizTalk 2004 accelerators and adapters ahead of the next release of BizTalk.
