Microsoft has named James I. Cash, Jr., a Harvard Business School professor and organizational consultant, as the eighth member of its board of directors. Cash is the second new director approved since May, following closely on the heels of Merck president and CEO Raymond V. Gilmartin. (See “Merck CEO to Join Board” on page 30 of the June 2001 Update.) With Cash, the board of directors is back to the same size that it was before the Nov. 2000 retirement of Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen and former Hewlett-Packard executive Richard Hackborn.

Business and Technology Expertise

Cash brings a strong combination of business and technology expertise to Microsoft’s board. He chaired Harvard’s MBA program from 1992 to 1995, and has a master’s in computer science and a doctorate in management information systems from Purdue University. In addition, Cash has authored many books and articles on information technology, and he sits on the boards of General Electric, broadband and cable equipment manufacturer Scientific-Atlanta, fixed-wireless ISP and phone service provider Winstar Communications, and several other companies.
