Analyst ReportHow to Choose Project Plan Subscriptions
- Customers with requirements beyond basic project management can select from Project Plan subscription tiers based on role and desired features.
- Task editing capabilities now included with Microsoft 365 suites can allow organizations to skip purchasing additional Project Plan subscriptions for team members.
- Project Online remains unchanged, with Plan 1 suitable for team members and Plan 3 adequate for most project managers.
Project management beyond the basic capabilities of Planner (included in Microsoft 365 and Office 365 suites) requires the purchase of a Project Plan subscription that grants access to the features of Project for the Web or Project Online. Both are Microsoft-hosted project management services: Project for the Web capabilities focus on smaller projects using Agile methods, and Project Online focuses on more traditional “waterfall” projects. Project Plan subscriptions are offered at several tiers and price points, and organizations can control costs by purchasing only the necessary tier of subscription service necessary for project managers and project team members. (For information on the subscription tiers offered, see the illustration “Project Plan Packaging”.) For organizations using Project for the Web, recent changes can entirely remove the need for additional Project Plan subscriptions for team members, enabling further savings.
