Human Workflow in BizTalk Server 2004
New programming interfaces and a development template in BizTalk Server 2004 can improve worker efficiency by automating key components of human-dependent business processes, which are referred to as workflow. BizTalk 2004s Human Workflow Services (HWS) is Microsofts latest attempt to deliver a platform that allows customers or partners to develop workflow applications or enhance other applications, such as content management systems, with workflow capabilities. However, HWS is not an out-of-the-box solution: creating HWS applications requires considerable developer skill.
In addition, developers will need to work closely with information workers to accurately model business processes in HWS and with IT personnel to ensure that BizTalk workflows, many of which could represent critical business processes, are properly deployed and configured.
What Is Workflow?
Workflow is a general term that refers to the sequence of activities and the corresponding flow of information that make up human-dependent business processes, such as the review of a business proposal or the weekly update of advertising copy on a Web site. Typically, businesses distinguish process work, which involves a set of well-defined tasks that are performed on a regular basis, from project work, which are one-off efforts that often involve unique sets of tasks, worker skills, and activities.
