  • Users’ experience searching SharePoint with cloud hybrid search may end starting June 30, 2025.
  • Customers upgrading to SharePoint Server SE with Feature Update 25H1 should consider accelerating their timelines to avoid disruption to cloud hybrid search—or move to SharePoint Online.
  • Customers who cannot upgrade in time will likely have to revert to an inferior and incomplete hybrid federated search, impacting farms and users.

Microsoft is retiring a key component of cloud hybrid search (CHS), called Search Content Service (SCS), starting June 30, 2025. On-premises customers must upgrade to Feature Update 25H1(25H1) for SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SPSE) to avoid disruption. CHS enables users to search for content across SharePoint Online and SharePoint Server using a single, cloud-based search index and display comingled results. For hybrid customers who do not upgrade to 25H1, Microsoft recommends reverting to hybrid federated search (HFS), even though it retired part of the functionality in 2024. If possible, customers can also migrate to SharePoint Online to eliminate the issue.
