Entra ID Governance, the premium add-on for Microsoft’s Entra identity service, will offer a paid license for external users beginning in the first quarter of 2024. External users are customers, partners, contractors, or others permitted to access an organization’s applications. The change implies higher costs for companies that use premium Entra ID features to collaborate with external users. Entra ID Governance costs will be based on the number of monthly active users (MAUs). Organizations will need to purchase licenses for their peak number of MAUs, at a monthly cost of US$0.75 per external user. Entra ID Governance, which is licensed for internal users as an add-on for Entra ID P1 and Entra ID P2, offers a set of capabilities to help approve, grant, manage, and revoke user access to applications, as well as offering an access approval workflow. This new license should help organizations manage access to internal applications, although organizations will need to manually calculate the number of licenses because the total number of MAUs will not be automatically tabulated by Microsoft.
