The Lync unified communications software will be generally available on Dec. 1, 2010. Like the Office Communicator and Communications Server products they replace, Lync combines instant messaging (IM), presence, voice, video, and conferencing. They integrate with Office, SharePoint, and Exchange and can provide communications functions in other line-of-business applications. Lync can provide an organization with a complete communications platform that can supplement, interoperate with, or replace existing private branch exchange (PBX) telephone systems. However, Lync is complex and deployment and ongoing management require knowledge of an organization’s IT infrastructure, data, and telephony networks.

Completing the Office 2010 Family

The Lync 2010 family includes the following (the Office branding has been dropped):

  • Lync, a single client that replaces Communicator as well as the separate Live Meeting Web conferencing client
  • Lync Server, which replaces Communications Server
  • Lync
