Analyst ReportMigrating to SharePoint Online
- Microsoft has released new tools for migrating data and sites to SharePoint Online.
- These tools incorporate feedback from the FastTrack program and could continue to improve over time.
- Finding and remediating compatibility issues with complex sites can still delay or block migrations.
- Many organizations will still need third-party tools or consulting to migrate data, or they may choose to leave it on-premises.
A new SharePoint Migration Tool and updated Migration Assessment Tool, intended to assist organizations moving to SharePoint Online, were released in Jan. 2018. These tools incorporate information about common migration scenarios seen by organizations moving from on-premises SharePoint and file shares to SharePoint Online or OneDrive for Business in Office 365, and they could simplify migrations that were previously performed manually or with third-party tools. However, since SharePoint Online does not support every feature of the on-premises version, many organizations will need to do significant additional remediation work before migration.
