Analyst ReportMobiComp to Aid Windows Mobile
MobiComp, whose software connects mobile devices to blogs and popular Web sites, has been acquired by Microsoft. The acquisition could allow Microsoft to enhance its Windows Mobile platform for the Web and tap MobiComp’s expertise in bringing Web content to mobile devices.
MobiComp, based in Braga, Portugal, is best known for its MobileKeeper Suite, which is made up of the following components:
- Backup and Restore, provides over-the-air backup and restore of data on mobile devices
- Communities and Sharing, which allows a user to create, share, and download content, or publish it directly to Web sites such as Flickr (Yahoo’s photo-sharing site)
- mTicker, which allows a user to subscribe to content such as RSS feeds and then delivers this content in a scrolling ticker on the device’s screen.
Among the device platforms MobileKeeper currently supports are Brew, J2ME, Symbian, and Windows Mobile Smartphone, and the client can be installed by manufacturers or downloaded by users. Several mobile operators, including Portugal-based TMN and Vodafone, offer the MobileKeeper suite to drive data usage, thereby increasing operator revenues.
