Analyst ReportMSDN Subscriptions Get Updated Hosting Benefits
Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscribers can now develop and test solutions built on Microsoft software using virtual machines (VMs) hosted by Microsoft or one of its partners. Subscribers with higher-end MSDN subscriptions can use free monthly usage credits and discounts to pay for services on Windows Azure, a Microsoft-hosted computing environment that can host VMs. Compared to using MSDN software deployed on-premises, a cloud-based approach promises faster provisioning, simplified license compliance, and other cost and flexibility advantages. However, some scenarios will require on-premises environments or additional hosting costs.
Using MSDN Software in Hosted Environments
MSDN subscriptions are licensed per-user and provide software use rights and supporting services for developers to learn new technologies and to design, create, test, and demonstrate applications in nonproduction environments.
Prior to June 2013, an MSDN subscriber was allowed to deploy software on any number of work and home devices, as well as in corporate virtual server farms, but not in Microsoft- or partner-hosted environments.
