Analyst Report.NET 6.0 Brings Long Term Support
- The .NET 6.0 cross-platform software development framework became generally available in Nov. 2021.
- It is a Long Term Support release and receives three years of support, so it is the best choice for applications requiring long stability periods.
- It includes improved performance, Hot Reload to speed development, source code simplifications, and updated programming languages.
New versions of .NET, which was previously branded .NET Core, are expected to be released annually: .NET 5.0 became generally available in Nov. 2020, and .NET 7.0 is planned for Nov. 2022.
.NET Background
.NET delivers class libraries (sets of development APIs) and a run-time environment required by so-called managed code applications that can be implemented in programming languages such as C#, Visual Basic, and F#.
.NET lets developers use .NET technologies (which were originally Windows-only with the .NET Framework) across multiple platforms including Windows, Linux, macOS, Android, and iOS. It is developed as open source software.
