Analyst Report.NET 7.0 Arrives as Short-Term Release
- .NET 7.0 will only be supported until May 2024, so .NET 6.0 or the upcoming .NET 8.0 are better choices for applications requiring longer stability periods.
- An integrated development environment (IDE) upgrade may be required, such as a move to Visual Studio 2022.
- It includes improved performance, enhancements to .NET MAUI and Blazor, and updated programming languages.
The .NET 7.0 cross-platform software development framework became generally available in Nov. 2022. New versions of .NET, which was previously branded .NET Core, are released annually, alternating between short- and long-term support life cycles. .NET 7.0 is a short-term (so-called Standard Term Support [STS]) version that will be supported until May 2024. (See the illustration “.NET Support Timeline.”)
.NET Background
.NET delivers class libraries (sets of development APIs) and a runtime environment required by so-called managed code applications that can be implemented in programming languages such as C#, F#, and Visual Basic.
