A recent flurry of embedded operating system (OS) betas and new programs indicates that Microsoft is stepping up its campaign to sell Windows as an OS for specialized non-PC devices. Microsoft now needs a consistent and coherent embedded strategy to make inroads in the embedded market if it is to succeed with its .NET vision of extending Web services to a variety of smart devices.

Recent announcements include the following:

  • Release of the second version of the Windows 2000 Server Appliance Kit.
  • Release of beta code for the next versions of Windows CE and Windows XP Embedded, and the imminent release of Whistler Server Embedded Beta 1.
  • Announcements of several new and expanded programs for embedded system developers.

At the Microsoft DevCon conference for embedded system developers in Feb. 2001, CEO Steve Ballmer admitted that in the embedded market Microsoft had proceeded “a little bit in fits and starts.” That raises a question: Does Microsoft have products that will enable it to compete in the embedded market while simultaneously building the foundation for .NET?
