Reworked light-use licenses could lower the cost of accessing data in Dynamics enterprise resource planning (ERP) products via portals, reporting applications, and third-party applications. Light-use licenses permit access to an ERP product without the product’s full client. They can improve efficiency and reduce license costs by letting users do specific tasks themselves, such as entering travel expenses or generating reports, without a full-access license and without going through another employee who has full access. The newest light-use licenses lower license costs for specific types of employee data access and for automated input and output.

Why Light-Use Licenses?

Until recently, the most important light-use license for Dynamics ERP products was the Dynamics Client for Office (DCO). The DCO was designed to license several kinds of usage, including the following:

  • Viewing and updating selected data (such as entering time worked or reviewing order status) via an ERP product’s SharePoint-based
