  • New capabilities in preview for Azure Migrate can help customers move from VMWare to Azure while staying on-premises.
  • The updates are aimed at customers unhappy with recent licensing, pricing, and partner changes made by Broadcom after acquiring VMWare.
  • But be aware that Azure Local is also a subscription-based solution, and Microsoft licensing is equally, if not more, complex.

New tools within Azure Migrate aim to simplify the process of moving on-premises VMWare systems to on-premises Azure Local (formerly known as Azure Stack HCI). This is particularly useful for customers unhappy with recent changes in VMWare licensing and pricing; however, Microsoft has already adopted similar licensing practices, so moving to Azure Local is not a cure-all. In addition, migration is a one-way process, so customers should ensure that moving to Azure Local is the right long-term move for a given workload.

Azure Migrate to Support Azure Local

Azure Migrate provides services to inventory, assess, and migrate VMs and SQL Server environments to Azure, but with new support for Azure Local, currently in preview, customers can now migrate systems while staying on-premises.
