More details of Microsoft’s push to integrate on-premises and cloud management infrastructures emerged with announcements made at the Microsoft Management Summit (MMS) conference in Apr. 2013. The updates, mostly available as previews, will be of interest to customers who have, or want to have, hybrid IT operations that combine on-premises and Microsoft-hosted components. However, there are relatively minor changes to the System Center lineup.

More Windows Azure Integration

While the conference was primarily focused on System Center 2012 SP1, which was released in Jan. 2013, there were several announcements about System Center and Windows Azure, including the following:

  • A preview of a System Center Monitoring Management Pack for Azure applications, which allows customers to use on-premises infrastructure (Operations Manager) to monitor Azure resources, can be downloaded for testing
  • A public paid preview of Azure Backup, which helps customers protect important server data off-site
