The Office 365 ProPlus suite for Windows and the corresponding Mac suite will receive major updates by the end of 2016. Corresponding Web and mobile Office applications will continue to receive small updates.

What Is Office 365 ProPlus?

The Office applications are Microsoft’s most widely used client applications for business. They enable document editing, data access and manipulation, e-mail, presentations, and collaboration on Windows PCs, Macs, and mobile devices. Office 365 ProPlus subscriptions license Office applications on a Per-User subscription basis. For PCs, Office 365 ProPlus is a suite that includes Access, Excel, InfoPath (deprecated), OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Skype for Business, and Word. The applications are installed and run locally on-premises.

Office 365 subscriptions that include ProPlus also include rights to related services and software:

Office Online, Microsoft-hosted applications that enable users to create and edit Office documents from a browser, without Office installed on the client. They deliver only a small subset of Office capabilities but can be useful on tablets and other computers where Office is not installed. (See the sidebar “Office Online“.)
