  • Cloud-based services like Power Apps, Power Automate, and Logic Apps can access on-premises data through a data gateway.
  • With the gateway, companies can use the cloud services to build workflows and reports with minimal coding, without moving data to a hosted service.
  • Allowing operations to cross from Microsoft-hosted services to on-premises data could introduce additional risks from poor coding or intentional attacks.
  • Microsoft 365 users will need to upgrade to a full Power Apps or Power Automate plan before accessing on-premises data.

Power Platform offerings are cloud-based services that offer workflow and report creation with minimal coding. Several of these services can use gateway software that runs on-premises to connect to data sources such as an organization’s on-premises enterprise resource planning (ERP) or line-of-business applications. The gateway works with Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, Azure Analysis Services, and Azure Logic Apps. It enables companies to take advantage of these Microsoft-hosted cloud services to simplify application and report development while continuing to host data and applications on-premises.
