PowerShell 3.0, Microsoft’s command-line interface (CLI) shell and scripting engine for Windows, will be released with Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, and is currently available in a second Community Technology Preview (CTP). PowerShell is an important tool for managing Windows desktop and server applications, such as Exchange Server, Office 365, and even some third-party tools, such as VMware’s Infrastructure Toolkit for Windows. Customers and partners, especially those who have not yet adopted PowerShell, should begin evaluating the updated version.

A Key Management Tool

PowerShell is a CLI shell and scripting environment that makes it easier and more efficient to manage Windows desktop and server applications by automating repetitive administrator tasks.

Although wizards and graphical tools such as the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) are useful when learning how to perform a task, they can be less efficient when performing complex or highly repetitive tasks, such as provisioning a large number of new users in Active Directory or Office 365, or making a policy change to a large number of computers. Consequently, many administrators have supplemented graphical management tools with scripting technologies for Windows, including the following:
