Analyst ReportPremium SSD v2 Offers Flexible Performance and Sizing
- Premium SSD v2 Azure Disk Storage provides low-latency storage for Azure VMs with performance that can be reconfigured without downtime.
- It offers higher performance than Premium SSD disks and more flexibility for changing workloads than other Azure Disk Storage options.
- Premium SSD v2 is intended for workloads like large databases, big data, and analytics that require high-performance storage.
- Service limitations mean organizations should continue to use Premium and Standard SSD disks for general-purpose workloads and failover infrastructure.
Premium SSD v2 disks, announced in Oct. 2022, offer higher performance and capacity than Premium SSD disks at a lower cost than Ultra SSD storage. Unlike Standard and Premium disks, Premium SSD v2 disks can be provisioned at any size up to 64TB, and performance levels can be changed without downtime. The offering should interest organizations using Azure VMs to host I/O-intensive applications, high-end databases, and other transaction-heavy workloads such as SAP HANA deployments. However, limitations of Premium SSD v2 disks make them unsuitable for workloads that require failover or redundancy across Azure availability zones or regions.
