Analyst ReportPreparing for Windows 10X
- A new Windows 10 variant—Windows 10X—supports dual-screen devices with hybrid-core processors.
- Windows 10X relies on specialized containers to run traditional Win32 applications.
- Organizations may want to understand Windows 10X because its features will likely be integrated into future versions of Windows 10 Enterprise.
Windows 10X is designed to support new devices such as Microsoft’s upcoming Surface Neo. The Neo features dual screens to increase the display area available to applications. It also uses hybrid processors with enough power to allow isolation of Win32 applications in virtualized containers to improve Windows’ reliability. (For more information on these devices, see “Surface Neo”.) This isolation will likely be integrated into future Windows 10 Semi-Annual Channel (SAC) versions, such as Windows Enterprise, the primary version for businesses. Therefore, at a minimum, organizations should invest some time and resources in testing Windows 10X preview releases and SDKs to see how the organization’s line-of-business applications run in isolated environments.
