Project for the Web is a Microsoft-hosted service for informal project managers.
It provides Teams and Power BI integrations but no interoperation with Project Online.
A new Microsoft Project subscription plan offers only Project for the Web.
Project management professionals will likely want to stay with Project Online until Project for the Web matures.

The new Project for the Web, previously known as Project service, is a hosted offering in Office 365 that provides Web-based project management capabilities. Project for the Web offers a simplified interface oriented toward informal project managers and includes integrations with Teams and Power BI. However, Project for the Web cannot work with projects created in Project Online, and a lack of some advanced project management features means Project Online will likely remain the tool of choice for rigorous project management for the time being.

Service Overview

Project for the Web became generally available in Oct. 2019. It provides Web-based collaborative project management capabilities and is built on what Microsoft calls its Power Platform, which includes Power BI, PowerApps, and Power Automate. Development of the new service was announced in late 2018, and it will eventually replace Project Online, the longstanding project management service.
