Project Server 2010, released in May 2010, provides customers with a single Microsoft product to manage enterprise-class project portfolios. The new version incorporates the previous Project Portfolio Server and has two key additions: Project Portfolio Management (PPM) for analyzing, optimizing, and managing a portfolio of projects based on business goals, and software development management through an integration pack for Visual Studio (VS). Project Server 2010 requires SharePoint Server 2010 (with premium licenses) and SQL Server; although many customers may have those servers already in place, those without SharePoint experience may require additional skilled IT staff.
The Project Identity
In the 2010 version, the Project family of products drops the Office branding and includes the following:
- Project Server 2010, a server application for project management that includes portfolio management features
- Project Professional 2010, a Windows client for project managers that provides
