RemoteApp is a special mode of Remote Desktop that enables server-based applications to interact with a user’s local desktop in a manner that is almost indistinguishable from locally installed applications. RemoteApp provides the user with familiar-looking and easy-to-use applications by eliminating any interaction between the user and the host server. But RemoteApp is unlikely to reduce the cost of a traditional Remote Desktop infrastructure, as it requires the same hardware, software, and licensing. RemoteApp also requires some additional configuration and maintenance to make individual applications available to users.

RemoteApp Compared to Remote Desktop

RemoteApp and Remote Desktop sessions offer similar functionality to end users: Users can run Windows desktop applications on a Remote Desktop server and interact with them on a local PC or mobile device. Both RemoteApp and Remote Desktop perform this task using Remote Desktop client software on the device that sends keystrokes and mouse movements to the server and receives and renders updates to the display of the application from the server. The local device does not need to be running Windows.
