Preliminary requirements for two different Windows 8 application certification programs became available in Dec. 2011—one for Metro-style applications and one for more traditional desktop applications. Partners who write commercial Windows applications will want to monitor the requirements so their applications will pass certification and be ready when Windows 8 becomes generally available in late 2012 or early 2013. Enterprises developing applications for internal use will also want to review the requirements, which traditionally serve as a list of common application programming errors to avoid. However, the requirements are subject to change.

Application Certification

The Windows application certification programs serve three basic goals:

  • Increase the perceived value of Windows by having a large catalog of compatible applications
  • Encourage developers to build applications that take advantage of specific Windows features that Microsoft wants to promote
  • Help customers identify
