  • Future versions of Windows 10 will use Hyper-V virtualization technology to isolate execution of unknown applications.
  • The OS sandbox may lessen the impact of malicious attacks on the OS and user data; however, in the preview users may need training as the feature requires manual processes.
  • A sandbox is not totally foolproof as some malicious software can detect when executing in isolation or will wait until it has been executed multiple times before doing damage.

Future versions of Windows 10, possibly as soon as early 2019, will use a VM-based sandbox to isolate the execution of unknown applications in order to protect the user’s data and environment. A variety of technologies, including firewalls and e-mail servers, use sandboxes to isolate the execution of links to Web sites or executable programs so they cannot harm the user’s environment. Although sandboxes are not foolproof and some malicious software may still get through, organizations may want to begin testing Windows Sandbox, now in preview, to see what role it may play in the organization’s security programs.
