A Windows Server Solution Phone Connector add-in and accompanying Windows Phone 7 applications allow remote administration of Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2011 Essentials, and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials from a Windows Phone 7 phone. The add-in, which was released on July 2011, illustrates the utility of the Windows Server Solution add-in management model and may benefit Microsoft partners who manage SBS 2011 Essentials servers for customers. While this add-in does not work on all Windows Server products, it shows how Windows Phone 7 applications can play an interesting role in server management.

The Add-In Management Model

The Windows Server Solutions add-in model was designed to provide common management interfaces for third-party application vendors that publish backup or other custom application software for Home Server, SBS Essentials, or Storage Server Essentials. Microsoft has used this add-in model to enable administration of these servers using Windows Phone 7.
