  • Shared device mode helps frontline workers securely share a pool of organizationally owned mobile devices.
  • It enables each worker to use their own Entra ID identities but requires compatible applications and specific configuration steps.
  • The feature is new, and support for it is still in preview for many Microsoft mobile applications.

Shared device mode, a feature of Entra ID, is a model for configuring Apple and Android mobile devices to enable frontline workers to use a pool of shared devices that belong to the organization. Shared device mode delivers a better approach for security, compliance, and auditing than offering users devices with a shared passcode. Shared device mode requires strategic configuration through a compatible mobile device management (MDM) service, Entra ID identities, compatible applications, and a supported iOS, iPadOS, or Android device. It also requires premium Intune licensing, a cost organizations have likely not planned for with shared devices, where keeping costs per user low is typically a requirement.
