Skype for Business Online calling services are available in additional countries, and new private branch exchange (PBX) features address gaps that may have prevented customers from replacing on-premises PBX systems with Skype for Business Online. Skype for Business technology enables users to view and publish presence status and communicate via chat, voice, video, and desktop sharing, and connect to external telephony services. Skype for Business Online could provide a viable alternative for organizations looking to move from on-premises telephony systems. However, the service still requires considerable expertise to deploy, and international availability of calling services is incomplete.

New Online Developments Focus on Telephony

Recent developments in Skype for Business Online through the first half of 2017 have primarily focused on telephony services. New PBX features bring the service more in line with the capabilities of traditional on-premises PBX systems, PSTN Calling is available in more counties, and capabilities for integration with on-premises PSTN (public switched telephone network) services have been enhanced.
