Software Licensing and Protection (SLP) Services is being discontinued. Current customers will be supported until at least December 31, 2009, but no new customers will be accepted. SLP is a set of tools and an online service for third-party application developers to prevent unauthorized use of their software and protect their intellectual property by making it harder to reverse-engineer .NET Framework applications. Current SLP customers will need to begin the search for third-party alternatives.

Activation for Third-Party Applications

Released in Oct. 2007, SLP helps developers prevent software piracy by providing an activation system similar to that used by Microsoft as part of its Windows Genuine Advantage program. An SLP SDK allows developers to mark sections of their code to execute only if an appropriate digital license has been obtained from an SLP server, which can be either hosted by Microsoft or on the customer’s premises. The SDK also transforms code to make it harder to reverse-engineer than the original source code.
