SQL Server 2019, expected in the second half of 2019, includes improved Linux database engine and integration components compared to SQL Server 2017. The upcoming version addresses many incompatibilities between Linux and Windows deployments of the product. It also sharpens the differences between the OSs: the Linux version will offer an exclusive deployment option for creating and managing data lakes and plans to bring SQL Server business intelligence (BI) roles from Windows to Linux are canceled in favor of Power BI investments.
Possible Use Cases
SQL Server 2017 introduced Linux OS support for most features of the core database engine, although on Linux it is limited compared to on Windows and is missing BI features, such as Reporting Services and Analysis Services.
