Microsoft provides free tools that can help find SQL Server 2014 instances in an organization’s network, analyze the instances for potential upgrade issues, and perform automated migrations to on-premises and Azure-hosted SQL services. Prior to performing an analysis or upgrade, the latest service pack (SQL Server 2014 SP3) should be applied.

Migration tools include the following:

Data Migration Assistant (DMA) can analyze SQL Server instances and detect potential upgrade issues that may impact database functionality when migrated to a newer version of SQL Server or Azure SQL destinations. DMA detects the use of deprecated or unsupported features and breaking changes in newer versions, and it provides recommendations and alternative approaches to resolve the issues. DMA can perform the migration of data, users, and database objects, including schema, indexes, relationships, and stored procedures. It also provides recommendations for post-upgrade changes to help with database performance and security.
