The second service pack for Microsoft’s SQL Server 2005 database management system and business intelligence platform delivers new features as well as fixes. Notably, SQL Server 2005 SP2 improves SQL Server’s compatibility and integration with new products such as Windows Vista, Office 2007, and SharePoint Server. New features mean new code, however, so organizations will have to test SP2 for compatibility and stability just as they would a minor product release.

SP2’s 143 documented fixes are split roughly evenly between the product’s database management system (DBMS) features, and its business intelligence components, which include the following:

  • Analysis Services, used to analyze historical data in specialized databases (called cubes) for fast interactive analysis and automated data mining
  • Reporting Services, for designing and generating human-readable reports from databases and data warehouses and distributing of these reports to large numbers of users on an ongoing basis
