Analyst ReportStream Adds Broadcast and Recording Services to Office 365
- The Stream video service is becoming an important component of other Office 365 services.
- Live event features based on Stream could replace Skype Meeting Broadcast for audio and video delivery to large audiences.
- The planned transition from Office 365 Video to Stream has been repeatedly delayed.
The Stream video service provides video hosting and sharing capabilities for Office 365 products. Initially positioned as a stand-alone replacement for the Office 365 Video service, Microsoft Stream now provides video broadcast and recording services for other Office 365 products, such as the Teams collaboration service.
Service Overview
Stream is a Microsoft-hosted service for hosting and sharing an organization’s internal video content, available for eligible Office 365 plans and as a stand-alone product; it is slated to replace the older Office 365 Video service.
Stream enables organizations to distribute video through Microsoft’s global network of data centers, which can speed video delivery to remote users and offers organizations more control over access to content than consumer-oriented services such as YouTube. Stream video can be embedded in several Office 365 services, including Yammer, Teams, and SharePoint Online, allowing video to be displayed within content from those services. However, like Office 365 Video, it does not support public sharing of video outside an organization.
